With a new job description in hand, the search is under way for a new president and chief executive officer of the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber's board of directors met Friday and approved the two-page document. About 25 people attended the session lasting about 1 1/2 hours.

Although a few resumes have been submitted, advertising for the job will begin in early January, according to Harry  A. Eadon Jr., chairman of the search committee. The deadline for accepting resumes is Jan. 21.

The Chamber is seeking a new leader after board members dismissed Jill McCartney of New Philadelphia as president and CEO on Nov. 30. No reason was stated publicly. She had served as president since Jan. 1, 2007, and in other capacities with the Chamber for six years prior to that.

Eadon said the new job description includes a few additions and clarifications regarding the full-time position and its responsibilities.

The job will be posted on the Chamber's website and advertised locally and on the Ohio Chamber of Commerce's website. The committee also is looking into advertising on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's website and through other economic development agencies.

Plans call for the seven-member search committee to create a scoring system and review all resumes before narrowing the field to 10. References will be contacted as the field is trimmed to five finalists for face-to-face interviews.

"Our objective is to make a recommendation to the full board of directors by the end of March," Eadon said. "The person would then be hired and start the job within a few weeks after that."

The search committee consists of Eadon, who is the president and executive director of the Tuscarawas County Port Authority at Dover; Kent Watson, co-owner of Watson & Burkey Wallpapering at New Philadelphia; Mike Davis, owner of Adventure Harley-Davidson at Dover; Ed Lee, commercial and industrial sales manager with J&J Refuse, a Kimble Company, at Dover; Wendy Zucal, executive director of the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum; Matt Mullen, an attorney with Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty at Sugarcreek; and Mayor Michael Taylor of New Philadelphia.

The job's scope of duties calls for the president and CEO to carry out the mission, policies and direction of the Chamber board through its governance council in accordance with the policies and procedures in the employee handbook.

"The primary role of the president is to recruit and retain members for the Chamber by enhancing the benefit and value of membership in the organization," Eadon said. "The president directs activities of the Chamber to promote business, industrial and job development and civic improvements in the community."

The president also will coordinate work with other community agencies to provide public services. The president also will administer programs to provide members with economic and marketing information that promotes economic growth and stability in the community.

The president will counsel business organizations and industry on problems affecting the local economy.

The person also will write and give speeches to government and business organizations to create greater understanding among the community, government and business organizations.

"We're looking for someone who can provide examples of experience in fundraising and grant writing specifically for the Chamber; show progressive stages of leadership experience; and participation or  leadership experience either as a volunteer or in a paid position with a not-for-profit organization; give examples of experience in building consensus in a team environment; and provide examples which show a strategic, forward thinking, goal-oriented and cooperative dynamic attitude," Eadon said.

The person also must be experienced in financial management and using management accounting systems.

An appropriate four-year or advanced degree is preferred.

The total salary and compensation package will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and may include health insurance, vision care, a 401(k), long-term disability insurance policy, vehicle allowance and cell phone.

Those applying should send a resume by e-mail to info@tuschamber.com or by mail to the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce at 1323 4th St. NW, New Philadelphia, O., 44663.
