“Trustees need more time before Blinn AD decision” |
| Trustees need more time before Blinn AD decision Posted: 17 Nov 2010 12:57 PM PST Blinn College trustees said Tuesday they want more time to look over a job description before moving to reinstate the athletic director position. The board held its regular meeting on the college's Bryan campus. The board wanted more information and discussion and will pick up the item again, said Cathy Boeker, Blinn College executive administrator of external affairs. "The board didn't see the job description until last night and they wanted to make sure it was the direction they wanted to go in," Boeker said today. "They wanted to be comfortable going back to an older structure." The board did authorize proceeding with the design and construction of student center improvements on the Bryan campus. It saw the preliminary designs for the renovation and the construction will be done in phases, Boeker said. The board also approved to charge correctional facility employees the same tuition rate as inmates, added a full-time security officer at the Bryan campus and two full-time laboratory assistants for the nursing program. The board created a single $300 deposit fee for all housing units on the Brenham campus effective next fall. During the public comment portion of the meeting, Brenham resident C.H. Harvey spoke about the suspension and reinstatement of head football coachBrad Franchione. He also spoke about Washington County taxes going to the Bryan campus. That, said Boeker, is incorrect. "The college spends more on operations and maintenance cost than it brings in taxes," Boeker said. "And operations and maintenance is the only area we can use money generated from property taxes. "We spend $3.3 million for the fiscal year of 2010-11, and we will only bring in $1.4 million (in property taxes)," Boeker said. "Clearly all the money coming in from Washington County taxpayers is accounted for in the expenses, and we are happy to give the numbers we have and how we spend our money." Blinn College trustees will hold a special meeting at noon Tuesday to discuss leasing property in Sealy, where it also holds classes. Trustees will also pick up the athletic director issue during that meeting, Boeker said. The following are comments from the readers. In no way do they represent the view of brenhambanner.com.
