“Bloomberg Offers Cathie Black Compromise” |
| Bloomberg Offers Cathie Black Compromise Posted: 26 Nov 2010 03:16 PM PST Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered a compromise agreement to state Education Commissioner David Steiner in a ten-page letter today. The letter includes a job description for a senior deputy chancellor. That post will be held by Shael Polakow-Suransky, a former principal who is currently the Deputy Chancellor for Performance and Accountability at the New York City Department of Education. The mayor had nominated Black to run the city school system, but an advisory panel voted this week to block her nomination, saying she didn't have the necessary experience for the job. Bloomberg's letter is a revised application for the waiver necessary for Black to get the position. State Education Commissioner David Steiner has the final ruling on the matter, and hinted that Black hire someone with more experience in the education field. Bloomberg's letter says Polakow-Suranksy will report directly to Black and oversee "all pedagogic matters." According to the letter, he will oversee the implementation of major educational policies including curriculum, education reform and staff development, among other things. Polakow-Suransky has worked in the school system for over a decade. In the past, he has worked as a teacher and also started an international school in the Bronx. Officials from the State Department of Education did not immediately return calls seeking comment. A spokesman for the teachers union says they look forward to working with Black and Polawkow-Suransky.
