| Melrose to hire city administrator Posted: 30 Oct 2010 10:35 AM PDT Following 18 months without a city administrator, the Melrose City Council has voted to post the position, based on an updated job description they approved in October. Applications will be taken until Nov. 26. The Melrose City Council and Melrose Public Utilities Commission, at a special council meeting on Oct. 13, adopted an updated job description for the position of the Melrose City Administrator. At the Oct. 21 meeting the council decided to advertise for the position. John Harren, current Melrose Public Works director, has announced he will apply for the position. He has removed himself from discussions pertaining to the position. The city administrator position in Melrose was created in 2000. Rose Ann Inderriden, who had been city administrator, served in the position until her retirement in 2005. Brian Beeman was then hired as city administrator and held the position until 2009, when the City Council voted to eliminate the position. Since that time the various duties were distributed among present city staff.According to Assistant City Administrator Karen Thostenson, the decision to reinstate the position came after an organizational study of the city staff and administration was completed. Flower There is now a Melrose flower, according to information presented Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Melrose City Council meeting. A hybrid flower named "Melrose" has been developed in Legden, Germany, a sister city of Melrose. It is hoped there will be a formal presentation of the flower locally. There has already been such a presentation in Legden. According to Councilor Jenny Mayers, the work has begun to have a Melrose flower sent here. In other actions the council: Approved hiring Abdo, Eick and Meyers LLP, to prepare a tax exempt form for the Fire Relief Association. Approved entering into an EMT refresher course agreement for members of the Melrose Ambulance Department. Cost is $4,425 for the first 15 members and $295 for each additional member. Set Tuesday, Nov. 9 as the night for canvassing the 2010 elections. Was informed that DTV of Diversicom has offered to film and broadcast Melrose City Council meetings. Approved the change of control of Melrose Telephone Company.
