Federal Issues Surface in State A-G's Race   Date: October 21, 2010
While the job description calls for defending and enforcing the laws of Kansas, the race for attorney general has taken a decidedly national tone. In particular, it has become - at least in part - about the new federal health care act. At issue is whether it is an unprecedented "power grab" as Republican Derek Schmidt sees it, or whether it is a law that doesn't conflict with the Kansas Constitution as viewed by Democrat Attorney General Steve Six. While Schmidt, the majority leader of the Kansas Senate, would join other states in fighting the law, Six takes the approach that the attorney general's office should use its resources to mind issues at home. That includes going after entities that prey on Kansans and Medicaid fraud. Also on the ballot November 2 is Libertarian Dennis Hawver.
