The Publisher is the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the Oregon Daily Emerald Publishing Co., an Oregon non-profit corporation. The Publisher's chief responsibility is for the administrative and financial operations of the corporation, including primary responsibility for ensuring profitability.

 The Publisher is an exempt employee, hired by and reporting to the Board of Directors or its designee, is responsible for implementing resolutions, orders and goals of the Board, and is subject to the Board's direction and control. The Board decides the Publisher's term of service.

General Duties

The Publisher leads a management team of professional department heads and collaborates with the student Editor in Chief, who is appointed by and reports to the Board. The publisher works in collaboration with the student Editor in Chief to support the editorial autonomy of the student news staff and to encourage and maintain a vibrant and innovative student organization publishing on multiple platforms. The Publisher hires and supervises the permanent professional staff.

The Publisher is responsible for the day-to-day business operation. He or she articulates the values and vision for the organization and is responsible for developing and carrying out the company's long-term strategic plan. The Publisher is expected to understand and abide by all company policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. The Publisher works with outside counsel when appropriate.

Specific duties

A. Financial, Tax, Risk and Facilities Management:Develops and recommends yearly budget for Board approval and prudently manages organization's resources according the Board-mandated goal of achieving profitability annually. Constantly monitors and evaluates company operations and adjusts to meet changing circumstances. Actively identifies and pursues new business strategies with the goal of growing company revenue. Works with the company's accountants to present a comprehensive annual budget review for the Board. Oversees and approves the purchase and maintenance and proper use of all company equipment as well as maintenance of facilities. Protects the status of the Oregon Daily Emerald and its related online and mobile sites as independent student media.

B. Strategic Planning: Developsa comprehensive strategic plan in conjunction with the board and provides regular reports on progress toward organizational goals.

C. Team-building: Works collaboratively with the Editor in Chief and professional staff members to support student innovation, achieve organizational goals, and provide professional development activities.

D. Human Resource Management: Hires, supervises, trains and evaluates professional department managers and is responsible for ensuring managers properly hire, train and evaluate subordinate staff according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations.  Manages the company's payroll budget in accordance with accepted standards of fairness and equity.

E. Community and Public Relations: Assures the Emerald and its mission, products and services are consistently presented in strong, positive image. Maintains and cultivates positive relations with the University of Oregon, clients,vendors, community partners, professional and college media contacts.

F. Alumni Relations: Manages outreach, maintains regular communications, and actively promotes the engagement of Emerald alumni as volunteers, advocates and donors.

G. Fundraising: Develops and oversees a comprehensive fundraising program, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals, and administrating fundraising records and documentation.

H. Board Liaison: Attends monthly board meetings, informs the board of the everyday operations of the organization, charts future growth for the board, and makes major decisions alongside the board. Performs and supervises other tasks as directed by the Board.

 

Qualifications

A. Educational requirements: Bachelors degree.

B. Experience: A record of leadership in a business setting, including direct supervisory experience, is expected. Prior management experience with a professional or college media organization is preferred. Experience mentoring students in a university or nonprofit environment is a plus.

C. Strong written and verbal presentation skills.

D. Finance: Must have the ability to establish, maintain and evaluate information and reporting systems which lead to the publication of accurate and timely financial statements and operating reports. Must show the skills required to interpret financial data and recognize trends that point to opportunities or potential problem areas. Must be able to develop a budgeting process built around a thorough understanding of the marketplace and the audience served by the company's media products. Must have the skills to develop, maintain and evaluate a capital budget and an investment strategy for the company's reserves and work with outside accountants to accurately report financial information for tax reporting purposes.

E. Strategic planning: Must demonstrate experience in developing long-term strategic plans and monitoring progress toward plans goals.Must show familiarity with trends and challenges facing journalism so as to recognize new business and development opportunities or emerging threats to existing business. A track record of innovation, including new product development, is expected.

G. Media: Experience in digital journalism is desired. Must have direct experience in, or demonstrate knowledge of, all aspects of newspaper production including news-editorial, print and Web production, distribution, advertising sales, marketing and administration.
