“Fitzgibbon chosen as Labor whip” |
| Fitzgibbon chosen as Labor whip Posted: 27 Sep 2010 03:33 AM PDT On Monday 27 September 2010, 20:33 EST Former defence minister Joel Fitzgibbon has been appointed government chief whip, a position that makes him the main disciplinarian on the treasury benches. As his job description indicates, Mr Fitzgibbon is entrusted with the job of "whipping" party members into line, ensuring they attend parliament and casting votes the way the leadership wants. "The chief whip's position will be one of the most challenging in the hung parliament," he said in a statement on Monday. "I look forward to being at the centre of this new parliamentary adventure, helping to deliver the government's positive agenda, and playing a role in the delivery of parliamentary reform. "I also look forward to a cooperative and positive working relationship with chief opposition whip Warren Entsch. Such a relationship will provide the Australian people with the effective representation they expect and deserve." Mr Fitzgibbon resigned as defence minister in mid-2009 after admitting his brother Mark, the head of health fund NIB, held meetings with Defence officials and US health company Humana over business opportunities that also involved members of Mr Fitzgibbon's staff.
