JOB DESCRIPTION: Owner of CertaPro Painters franchise, 705B S.E. Melody Lane, 816-305-6494, www.certapro.com

What are the trends you're seeing in house painting?

People are really turning their attention to ceilings. Say you have a cobalt wall, a light gray ceiling might be nice. They want to get rid of popcorn ceilings, which takes a lot of work. Some people go for a knock-down texture, which is cheaper. But a lot of people want the ceilings smooth, which adds 15 to 20 percent to the cost.

What should homeowners who want their exteriors painted have ready for you?

Choosing colors would be helpful, although we can help people with that. Get samples and test kits from a paint store. Paint it on the house in back and see what you like best in morning light and evening light.

Why hire a professional painter?

The exterior involves a lot of prep work. It was a rough winter, so there's a lot of wood rot. We have skilled carpenters to replace bad wood. Plus a house needs scraping and a good power washing to get rid of the chalking, peeling and cracking paint.

What's an under-the-radar paint tip?

You can paint your deck. A lot of people, especially those who want to replace their deck with composite down the road, are doing that. Think about your trellises and even painting your pots.

Any tips for the interior?

Choose colors that really enhance the furniture you have. Make sure the colors really set off the fireplace, which is the focal point of the room.

Tell us about your home.

It was built in 1995 in Lone Jack. It's 2,500 square feet with four bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. I did my own contracting.

Are you a do-it-yourselfer?

Yes. I go to great lengths to fix my own appliances, repair walls, electrical and, of course, paint. There's nothing in my own house I haven't done. I collect DIY books.

What's your favorite room in your house?

The kitchen. I love to cook. I do some good Mexican, large breakfasts and grilling.

What's your next house project?

Painting the exterior of my own house. I'm getting great ideas from customers on colors to choose.
