| Chef convicted of helping Osama escape GIs Posted: 08 Jul 2010 01:02 AM PDT A Sudanese prisoner accused of guarding Osama bin Laden and helping him escape US forces in Afghanistan pleaded guilty at Guantanamo yesterday, giving the Obama administration its first conviction in the controversial war-crimes court. Ibrahim al Qosi, whose job description also included cooking for the terrorist at the Star of Jihad compound in Afghanistan, has been held at Guantanamo for more than eight years. His sentence could range from no additional time to life. A panel of military officers will deliberate his sentence Aug. 9. Qosi, 50, is only the fourth captive convicted in the controversial military tribunals since the Guantanamo camp was opened to hold terrorism suspects in January 2002. Two were sent back to their homes in Australia and Yemen after serving brief sentences. The other, al Qaeda videographer Ali Hamza al Bahlul of Yemen, remains at Guantanamo serving life for conspiring with al Qaeda and providing material support to terrorism -- the same charges to which Qosi has admitted.
