There's an unusual job listing on Craig's list today: "Backup Attorney General of Washington."
Description: Current Attorney General Rob McKenna is known to take frequent breaks from his legal responsibilities. The Backup Attorney General steps in to serve as the top legal officer for state government when McKenna fails to fulfill the duties of his office. The Backup Attorney General leads a team of attorneys who represent state clients and the public interest as directed under state law.
Job Responsibilities: Be on call 24 hours a day to step in when Rob McKenna goes AWOL ...
It's not clear from the ad who posted it, but when I sent them an email, Fuse Washington, a Democrat-leaning political group, called me back.
"We believe Rob McKenna isn't fulfilling his legal responsibilties," said Collin Jergens, a spokesman for the group. Fuse is upset that McKenna is challenging the national health care law and about his tussel with Washington's Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark.
McKenna's spokeswoman, Janelle Guthrie, sent me this response:
"Unfortunately due to the state's budget crisis and the current hiring freeze, the Attorney General's Office is not hiring for the job being advertised and this ad is in fact a hoax. During tough economic times, it's tempting to be lured in by phony job postings such as this. In fact, just recently scammers duped members of the Yakama Nation into sharing personal information, including their social security numbers, in exchange for the promise of lucrative BP Oil Spill cleanup jobs. We urge any consumer who was duped by this phony ad to review the tips provided on our Web site to protect themselves from becoming a victim of identity theft and we remind people to always be skeptical of job offers that seem too good to be true."
